How long is the TCF Canada and how many questions?

Checked November 1, 2026

TCF Canada takes 2 h 47 in total, and all 4 tests are mandatory. There are 39 listening questions, 39 reading questions, 3 writing tasks and 3 speaking tasks.

Test Content Duration
Listening (compréhension orale) 39 multiple-choice questions, 4 options each 35 min
Reading (compréhension écrite) 39 multiple-choice questions, 4 options each 60 min
Writing (expression écrite) 3 tasks 60 min
Speaking (expression orale) 3 tasks, face to face with an examiner 12 min including 2 min of preparation

On the day, three things matter.

  • Each listening recording plays once, and the question follows it. Both listening and reading get harder as they go.
  • Writing word counts are 60–120 words for task 1, 120–150 for task 2 and 120–180 for task 3.
  • Speaking starts with a 2-minute directed interview and no preparation. The role-play has 2 minutes of preparation and 3 min 30 of dialogue, and the last task is a point of view to express for 4 min 30.

You sit all four tests, and there is no choice of skills.

Each test is broken down in TCF Canada exam format.
