Is the TCF Canada on paper or on computer?
Checked November 1, 2026
Both exist. The TCF can be taken on paper or on computer, and the approved centre tells you which format its session uses when you ask about dates and price.
Two things stay the same.
- Speaking is always a face-to-face exchange with an examiner, even in a computer-based session. The other tests can be on computer.
- It is still TCF Canada either way, with four mandatory tests and 2 h 47 in total.
Here is where the format makes a difference.
- On paper you write by hand, and illegible handwriting can lead to a writing result of “A1 non atteint”. On computer you type.
- FEI notes that in some computer-based writing tests the first correction may be done by FIDELIA and the second is always human. If you would rather avoid that, ask to sit on paper.
- The extra third of time for candidates with a disability is available only in paper sessions.
Before you book, ask the centre whether the session is on paper or on computer, and whether the other format is offered on another date.
