Sample answer for TCF Canada speaking task 1

Checked November 2, 2026

Task 1 is a 2-minute guided interview with no preparation. A good answer gives two or three sentences per question, moves between present, past and future, and offers concrete details the examiner can pick up on. Below is a full interview, made up, with what each answer brings. Don’t learn it, a recited text can be interrupted and penalised.

The interview

The examiner, the candidate and the answers are made up. The themes come from the list France Éducation international’s (FEI) sample paper gives the examiner (family, work, leisure, housing, plans). The exam is in French, so the interview is too.

Examinateur. Est-ce que vous pouvez vous présenter ?

Candidate.

Examinateur. Vous habitez en ville ?

Candidate.

Read aloud, what the candidate says takes about 1 min 30. The examiner’s questions and follow-ups fill the rest of the 2 minutes. If time is left, the examiner will ask another question, about travel or languages for example.

A short answer and a developed answer

Question Too short Developed
Vous habitez en ville ? (Do you live in town?) »
Et en dehors du travail ? (And outside work?) »

The short answer is correct, but it shows no complex sentence, no past tense and no opinion. The examiner has to prompt again, and you lose a chance to show your level.

What each answer shows

Answer What it brings
Introduction The key facts in three sentences, not a recited list
Work A nuanced opinion (« c’est stressant, mais… », it’s stressful, but…) and a precise past fact
Leisure A before/now contrast, imperfect then present tense
Housing A plus, a minus, and a future condition (« si nous restons… », if we stay…)
Plans The conditional (« j’aimerais », I would like) and a reason

The handbook sets this task the goal of talking with someone you don’t know. For speaking, FEI assesses among other things the ability to talk about yourself and your family and work life. Each answer here gives a hook for the next question, which keeps the exchange natural.

How to use it

  1. Read the list of themes and note, for each, one fact and one example that are true for you, as keywords.
  2. Have someone ask you the questions in random order, and answer out loud with a timer running.
  3. Record yourself and check that your answers mix present, past and future or conditional.

The format and themes are covered in speaking task 1. NCLC Prep marks writing, not speaking. If your writing also needs work, NCLC Prep can mark a writing task out of 20 for free.
