Sample answer for TCF Canada speaking task 2

Checked November 2, 2026

In task 2, you have 2 minutes to prepare questions, then 3 min 30 of dialogue where you speak first and lead the exchange. A good answer sets the scene, covers each point in the topic, reacts to the examiner’s answers and ends with a summary. Below is a full example, on a made-up topic in France Éducation international’s (FEI) format.

The topic

Topic (made up). » The examiner works at the front desk of a local sports centre, you have just moved in and want to sign up.

As in FEI’s sample paper, the instructions say who plays which role, and the brackets list the points to cover. You may take short notes on the scrap sheet the examiner gives you, but not write on the topic sheet.

The notes from the 2 minutes

Keywords, not sentences. You need to read them at a glance.

The dialogue

Candidat. Bonjour madame.

What this dialogue shows

  • He leads the exchange. The opening sets the scene, then each bracketed point is covered, as FEI’s instructions require (you lead the conversation).
  • He reacts. « Ah, une piscine… », « Donc l’année revient moins cher » (so the year works out cheaper) show he is listening, not reading out a list.
  • He varies the questions. « Est-ce que… », « Quelles… », « À quelle heure… », « Combien… », and an either/or question (« au mois ou à l’année ? »).
  • He wraps up. The final summary shows he understood the information.

Read aloud, this dialogue runs under 3 min 30, because the examiner’s answers are short here. On test day they may be longer or shorter. If you run out of questions before the end, ask for details on an answer (« Et les cours collectifs, c’est quel genre ? », and the group classes, what kind are they?).

The handbook lists, among the speaking skills assessed, asking questions suited to the situation. That is exactly what this dialogue practises.
