What TCF Canada score do I need for NCLC 8?

Checked November 3, 2026

NCLC 8 starts at 503 in listening, 499 in reading and 12 out of 20 in writing and in speaking. As your first official language it is worth 23 CRS points per skill (22 with a spouse), 6 more than NCLC 7. It does not change skill transferability points, which only move at NCLC 9.

Skill NCLC 7 NCLC 8 NCLC 9 from
Listening 458–502 503–522 523
Reading 453–498 499–523 524
Writing 10–11 12–13 14
Speaking 10–11 12–13 14

In listening, the NCLC 8 band is only 20 points wide, from 503 to 522. In reading it is 25. In writing and speaking it is two marks, 12 and 13 out of 20. In FEI’s handbook, 12–13 out of 20 is B2.

On TEF Canada

For TEF Canada, IRCC wants the scores from the « Équivalence ancien score » column. There, NCLC 8 is 349–370 in speaking, 280–297 in listening, 233–247 in reading and 349–370 in writing. These numbers don’t compare with TCF scores.

What NCLC 8 is worth

Points per skill NCLC 7 NCLC 8 NCLC 9
CRS, single 17 23 31
CRS, with a spouse 16 22 29
Federal Skilled Worker grid 4 5 6

Going from NCLC 7 to NCLC 8 in all four skills adds 24 CRS points, single or with a spouse. The next step, from NCLC 8 to NCLC 9, adds 32 single and 28 with a spouse.

What NCLC 8 doesn’t change

  • Skill transferability. For education and foreign work experience, IRCC gives these points at two steps. First all skills at CLB 7 or above, then all at CLB 9 or above. NCLC 8 everywhere stays on the first step.
  • French-language rounds and the 25 or 50-point French bonus. Both need NCLC 7 in all four skills. NCLC 8 adds nothing there.
  • Program minimums. The Canadian Experience Class (TEER 0 or 1 jobs) and Federal Skilled Workers need NCLC 7. No Express Entry program has NCLC 8 as its minimum.

So NCLC 8 is mostly about CRS points. If your profile sits just under a cut-off, 24 points may be enough. Otherwise the real jump is NCLC 9, because of transferability.

In writing, NCLC 8 means 12 out of 20, two marks above NCLC 7. Write one task to see where you are, and find every level in the NCLC conversion table.
