How long does it take to prepare for TCF Canada?
Checked November 2, 2026
No official source gives a preparation time. Yours depends on the gap between your current level and the target NCLC, in your weakest skill. On top of the study time come fixed delays, up to 15 working days for results and at least 20 days before you can sit the test again if the first score falls short.
Step 1, measure the gap
Do a timed practice test in each skill and compare with IRCC’s thresholds.
| Skill | NCLC 7 | NCLC 9 |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 458 | 523 |
| Reading | 453 | 524 |
| Writing | 10/20 | 14/20 |
| Speaking | 10/20 | 14/20 |
An unofficial practice test does not give a real score out of 699, because FEI does not publish its scale. It places you roughly. For writing, a mark out of 20 estimated by an outside marker tells you more than a feeling.
Step 2, turn it into a length of time
This is our grid, not an official rule. It assumes regular practice, daily or close to it.
| Where your weakest skill is | Rough order of magnitude |
|---|---|
| Already at the target in practice, with margin | A few weeks to learn the format and the pace |
| Just below (for example 9/20 when aiming for 10) | 1 to 2 months of focused work on that skill |
| One CEFR level below (B1 when aiming for B2) | Several months, and real language work, not just method |
Two profiles to make it concrete, with our estimates.
| Profile | Practice scores | Rough order of magnitude |
|---|---|---|
| Almost ready for NCLC 7 | Listening about 480, reading about 470, writing 9/20, speaking 11/20 | Writing blocks, 1 point below the threshold. 4 to 6 weeks focused on writing, then the test |
| B1 across the board, aiming for NCLC 7 | Listening about 400, reading about 410, writing 7/20, speaking 8/20 | All four skills block. Several months of language work before booking |
Your weakest skill sets the timeline, because IRCC reads each skill separately. Strong listening does not make up for NCLC 6 in writing.
Step 3, add the test calendar
| Step | Delay | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Find a session | Varies, each centre sets its dates | FEI |
| Results | Up to 15 working days after FEI receives the session material | FEI |
| Retake if needed | At least 20 days after the first sitting | FEI |
| Validity for Express Entry | Under 2 years old when you create the profile and when you apply | IRCC |
Example. You need valid results by early June, and you want to keep a second chance.
- Early April, first test.
- Late April, results arrive, up to 15 working days after FEI receives the material, plus the centre’s shipping time. The 20-day rule has already passed, but only now do you know whether you need to retake.
- Early May, second sitting if the centre has a seat.
- Late May, second results, just before the deadline.
Keeping a second attempt therefore means sitting the first test about 8 weeks before the date you need the certificate.
