Which book to prepare for TCF Canada, and which test to use it for?

Checked November 3, 2026

No book is necessary. Start with the free FEI samples and TV5Monde for listening and reading. If you want a paper book for those two tests, one possible choice is ABC TCF (CLE International, 2024), whose publisher page lists audio, answer keys and transcripts. We have not read it and it does not name TCF Canada. Skip its language structures part. Two titles by Saadia Behilil name TCF Canada according to their listings, but we have read no book. No book corrects your writing or your speaking, so plan for corrections.

Lists of “best books for TCF Canada” mix up titles, publishers and years. We kept only what we could confirm on a publisher, retailer or FEI page. We read those pages, not the books themselves, so we don’t judge the quality of their content.

Our bottom line

Our opinion, not FEI’s.

  • By default, don’t buy a book. Start with FEI’s free samples (free test page) and TV5Monde for listening and reading.
  • One paper book for comprehension. ABC TCF (CLE International, 2024) is the one whose publisher page lists audio, answer keys and transcripts. We have not read it and it does not name TCF Canada. Skip its language structures part.
  • For writing and speaking, a book gives models and prompts, but it doesn’t correct you. Plan for corrections.
  • Don’t buy a self-published title blind if you can’t read an extract. Run the three checks below first.

The books we found

Two titles by the same author name TCF Canada, according to their listings. We call them self-published because one listing says “Independently published” and both ISBNs start with 979-8. We have not read their content.

Book What the page says Names TCF Canada?
Préparer Mon TCF Canada, Saadia Behilil, paperback, 84 pages, 20/05/2024, ISBN 979-8326175441 According to its listing, introduction, practice by level from A1 to C2 in reading and listening, tasks 1 to 3 in writing and speaking, one mock test and the answer keys. The listing mentions no audio Yes, according to its listing
TCF Canada Expression Orale, 100 sujets, Saadia Behilil, 76 pages, 13/06/2024, ISBN 979-8328420983, independently published According to its listing, 100 corrected speaking prompts. Amazon.com lists it as out of print. Nothing on the other three tests Yes, speaking only
ABC TCF, tous niveaux, CLE International, published 12/12/2024, ISBN 9782090398410 Downloadable audio, web app, answer keys and transcripts, tips for writing and speaking, one simulation No, TCF in general. The page lists TCF, TCF Québec, French nationality and prior admission
200% TCF, Prepmyfuture, Ellipses, 2021, 128 pages, ISBN 978-2-340-06121-7 Cited in FEI’s December 2022 list. We did not read the publisher’s page, this is the least verified row Not stated
Réussir le TCF, Bertrand and Schaffner, Éditions de l’École polytechnique, ISBN 978-2-7302-1536-7 240 pages, one CD, answer keys. Listening, language structures and reading only. The publisher’s leaflet still refers to the CIEP, the former name of FEI. We saw no retailer page No, and older

On Behilil’s titles, our opinion. According to its listing, the 100 speaking prompts book offers 100 corrected prompts with no method announced, and free prompts already exist in the speaking prompts page. For Préparer Mon TCF Canada, we can’t say whether its models are reliable, so compare them with FEI’s own prompts before imitating them.

Another name you will come across is “Maîtriser le TCF Canada”. It is a PDF sold on the tcfca.com site, which says it was written by an examiner. It covers ideas for task 3 of writing and speaking. We could not verify those claims, and the testimonials are the seller’s.

FEI’s December 2022 list recommends books from French publishers and says exam formats may evolve, but that these books remain useful for practice. It cites no title on TCF Canada. We give no prices, they vary between shops.

What to use in a book, test by test

TCF Canada test Use from a book Skip
Listening, 39 questions in 35 minutes Series with audio. Play each document once, then reread the transcript Levels A1 and A2 if you aim at NCLC 7
Reading, 39 questions in 60 minutes Timed series, about 1 min 30 per question General explanations about the test
Writing Prompts and model texts, to compare with your own copy Models to learn by heart, see the memorised text question
Speaking Prompts to record yourself on Ready-made answers to recite
Language structures Nothing for the exam, it is a TCF tout public test That whole part. For grammar, see grammar in TCF Canada

Three checks before buying

  1. The publication date. A book more than five years old may no longer reflect the current test.
  2. The exact name of the test. “TCF”, “TCF Québec” and “TCF Canada” are not the same thing, see TCF Canada or TCF tout public.
  3. Audio and answer keys. Without audio, listening practice is unusable, and without answer keys you can’t tell why you got something wrong.

How to pair it with free work

  1. Do your series, timed.
  2. Move to FEI’s free writing and speaking papers, listed in the free test page, to check you can handle the real format.

“Free PDF books” found by searching are often pirated or out-of-date copies, and a “bank of leaked papers” can’t be official. Go through the publisher or a bookseller instead.

Get a text written with the book closed corrected. The corrector flags every mistake and estimates your NCLC, with a limited free trial. NCLC Prep corrects writing only, not speaking or the comprehension tests that books train.
