Which ID do I need to take TCF Canada?
Checked November 3, 2026
At registration, TCF Canada asks for your passport number. On test day you need valid photo ID, meaning a passport, residence permit or national ID card. Without it you don’t get into the room. If your ID was lost or stolen, FEI’s handbook accepts the police report receipt together with a photocopy of the ID.
At registration
The centre asks for valid ID with a recent photo and, for TCF Canada, your passport number. Your surname, first name and date of birth go onto the certificate as given, with the photo taken on test day. Give them exactly as they appear on your passport.
On test day
| Situation | What the handbook says |
|---|---|
| Normal case | Passport, residence permit or national ID card, valid on the test day, with a photo |
| Photo hard to match to you | A second ID may be requested |
| ID with no expiry date (some countries) | Accepted if you are recognisable from the photo, otherwise a second ID |
| ID lost or stolen | Police report receipt, plus a photocopy of the ID |
| Adult with no ID document | Receipt of a residence permit application, asylum application receipt or certificate (with a photo), receipt of international protection, driving licence (the handbook’s note on ID also lists a school enrolment certificate) |
Two common questions, as we read the handbook.
- Passport at registration, ID card on the day? The handbook accepts a passport, residence permit or national ID card on test day, without requiring the same document as at registration. The name must of course match. If in doubt, ask the centre beforehand.
- A photo on your phone or a photocopy? No. The handbook asks for the valid original. A photocopy is only provided for together with the police report of loss or theft.
Our advice, beyond the handbook.
- Bring the passport whose number you gave. If you have changed passports since registering, tell the centre before test day and bring both.
- Check the expiry date the day before. An ID that has expired on test day isn’t enough.
- Keep a second ID in your bag if your photo is old.
What stays on the desk
Only your ID, your notice to attend and a blue or black pen. Phone off and belongings left where the staff say. The full day is in TCF Canada exam day.
Collecting the certificate
If you collect your certificate at the centre instead of downloading it, the same IDs are requested.
