Task 2, an annotated model answer
Checked November 1, 2026
Task 2 asks for two things in 120 to 150 words. You tell an experience, then comment on it to reach a goal, such as making a claim, persuading or making up with someone. Most weak texts tell the story well and comment badly. This page shows the same letter twice, a plain version and a version aimed at B2, the level FEI’s table gives for marks of 10 to 13 out of 20.
The topic and both texts are ours. The method and the past tenses are covered in the task 2 guide.
The topic
Consigne. (120 mots minimum, 150 mots maximum)
In English, your local library has been closed on Sundays since last month. You write to the city councillors to tell them how this has affected your family and to ask them to reverse the decision.
The story is about your family. The goal is to get a decision changed. The readers are elected officials, so the register is formal, with a proper opening and closing.
Version 1, plain and complete
Madame, Monsieur,
Merci beaucoup.
Salutations,
Amina Diallo

The story is clear and the past tenses are well chosen. The passé composé tells the day it closed, the imparfait describes the old habit. But the comment is one sentence (“c’est une mauvaise décision”) with no reason that speaks to the councillors. The request asks for nothing specific, and “Merci beaucoup. Salutations” is too casual for a letter to a city council. One agreement slip is left in too (“Mes enfants était tristes” instead of “étaient”).
Version 2, the same letter at the target level

What changes between the two letters
The table ties each change to one of FEI’s criteria families, linguistic, pragmatic or sociolinguistic. That link is our reading, since FEI publishes no annotated scripts.
| Version 1 | Version 2 | Criteria family |
|---|---|---|
| Pragmatic, cause and effect are linked |
| Pragmatic, a concession then an argument aimed at the reader |
| Pragmatic, a precise and realistic request reaches the goal |
Both letters tell the same story. The second gains mostly in the comment. It accepts the city’s constraint, explains who loses out and proposes opening hours. A councillor can say yes to that request.
Why version 2 aims at NCLC 7
IRCC’s table puts NCLC 7 in writing at 10 or 11 out of 20, and FEI’s table labels 10 to 13 as B2. We don’t mark these letters. The mark out of 20 comes from all three tasks, each read by two markers, and one task alone doesn’t give it.
Version 2 shows what FEI says it assesses in writing. It tells, explains, justifies a position and links ideas. It does so with varied tenses (imparfait, passé composé, a subjunctive after “je comprends que”) and a register held from the first line to the last.
Before you hand in task 2
- The story has a date or a precise moment and at least one concrete detail.
- The comment is at least two sentences and gives a reason.
- The last part reaches the goal in the consigne, through a request, a proposal or an apology.
- The opening and closing suit the readers.
- The text has 125 to 145 words.
